Welcome to the HypnoBirthing Matters website.

HypnoBirthing Matters Have you heard how enjoyable and rewarding childbirth can be ? Have you heard mothers describing the birth of their child as a wonderful, calm and happy experience? We hope that soon more and more women will answer ‘yes’, because this is how we believe nature intended childbirth to be. This is what HypnoBirthing is about.

What is HypnoBirthing?

HypnoBirthing is an educational childbirth programme, through which mothers are prepared to give birth to their babies more easily and more comfortably in an atmosphere of gentility. It is a philosophy as much as a set of techniques, aimed at returning to mothers the art of birthing their babies in a relaxed, stress-free way.

HypnoBirthing was developed by Marie Mongan, an American hypnotherapist. Marie based her teachings on the work and research done by Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, a British obstetrician and pioneer for natural childbirth, and on her own experiences from giving birth to her own four children. The first HypnoBirthing mum was Marie’s daughter, Maura, who gave birth naturally and without discomfort to Marie’s first grandson, Kyle, the first HypnoBirthing baby.

Since that first HypnoBirthing a growing awareness that babies can be born in an atmosphere of calm, joy and gentility has spread. More and more parents are realizing that severe pain does not have to be an inevitable part of childbirth. More and more parents are experiencing the numerous benefits that the authentic HypnoBirthing programme brings to the mother, the baby and the birthing companion. These benefits begin during the pregnancy, continue throughout the birth and even after the baby is born.

‘My dream is that every woman, everywhere, will know the joy of a truly safe, comfortable and satisfying birthing for herself and her baby.’

Marie F. Mongan 1992
