HypnoBirthing® Myths and Facts
Myth: Hypnosis is the same as sleep.
Fact: Hypnosis is not the same as sleep but it can help you relax deeply. However, using self hypnosis when you go to bed can help you go to sleep.
Myth: You must keep your eyes closed during hypnosis.
Fact: Not necessarily. Although it is common to close your eyes, there are many trance states where this is not so. For instance, sports people may go into a state of ‘flow’. This is a hypnotic state where attention is focused on performance but the eyes are open. During HypnoBirthing you may close your eyes as you relax and go within your birthing body. However, if you want to open them you will be able to do so.
Myth: In a hypnotised state you must keep still.
Fact: This is definitely not necessary. You can move to get comfortable, just as you do when sleeping. During HypnoBirthing you will have control of your body, using the techniques we teach to assist your body and your baby in the birthing process.
Myth: You will be under the control of your HypnoBirthing instructor.
Fact: You will definitely not be under the control of your HypnoBirthing instructor. He or she will be showing you how to increase your control over your birthing experience.
Myth: Hypnosis is magical and mystical.
Fact: Hypnosis is a natural state. It is not at all magical or mystical.
Myth: Using HypnoBirthing in labour means I will not be able to feel anything.
Fact: HypnoBirthing helps you to eliminate the fear that can cause tension and thus pain (the Fear- Tension- Pain Syndrome postulated by Dr. Grantly Dick-Read). However, you will be able to feel the natural sensations that enable you to work with your body and your baby so as to assist in the birth of your baby.
